Druv Sitwala falters but survives

Mumbai: Dhruv Sitwala is India No.3 in billiards, but then in handicap billiards things can take a topsy turvey turn sometimes. That’s what happened with him on Tuesday.  In the end, however,  he heaved a sigh of relief as he got  the better of Alex D’Cruz 200-180  to advance into the second round of the  Rosy Blue sponsored Hindu Gymkhana-Wilson Jones All India Open handicap Billiards  championships, hosted by P.J.Hindu Gymkhana here on Tuesday.

Dhruv was on minus 130 handicap to his rival’s plus 85 and to beat his rival he had to score 330, while Alex was required to score only 115 points.  Of course, class always tell in the end as Dhruv showed it abundantly when it matered. At one stage both needed 25 to win. First Alex fouled when on 175, and then  Dhruv too committed a foul to neutralize the advantage. However, Alex missed again and this time  Dhruv did what was expected of him, he finished the tie.

In other close billiards ties, CCI’s Keki Nicholson had some anxious moments while beating Hindu Gymkhana’s Mahadeo Bhogle 200-185 and  Nikhill Khullar scored  a narrow 200-191 win over Kiazad Mehta.
