Joshi records two double century breaks

Mumbai: International and India No.5 Devendra Joshi was at his very best.  Playing with minus 275 handicap, he routed Naresh Sadarangani 250-101 to make the last eight grade in the billiards event of the  Blue-sponsored Hindu Gymkhana-Wilson Jones All India Open handicap Billiards/Snooker  championships, hosted by P.J.Hindu Gymkhana here on Satdurday.

Needing 525 to overcome the stiff margin, he defeated Naresh, who was on plus 65 handicap, Joshi hit 212 and followed it  by 274 to achieve his goal.

Another international, who too was on minus 275 handicap, was Dhruv Sitwala against Abhay Haralkar (+80). Dhruv, could not record as big as Joshi’s breaks, but 74, 57, 89 breaks ensured him a place in the quarterfinals. Dhruv, later,  showed his versatility by eclipsing Kolkata’s Manish Jain in a thrilling snooker pre-quarterfinals tie which went to the wire. Dhurv playing with plus 15 handicap to Manish’s plus 25, was outplayed in the opening frame. But later he warmed up to take the next two frames, only to lose the fourth one. Dhruv, however, well known for his ability to extract himself from the jaws of defeat, yet again turned it into a fine win, clinching the tie at 24-103, 81-50, 67-63, 69-89, 88-63.

Meenal Thakur was another player, who had to fight all the way before she took Hitesh Kotwani in her stride with a 97-68, 105-80, 60-111,98-104, 106-85 win.
