Billiards champion Wilson Jones passes away

Mumbai, October 4: Former world billiards champion Wilson Jones passed away at his residence at Worli in central Mumbai on Saturday morning after a prolonged illness. He was 81.

"He had suffered from a paralytic stroke twice earlier and had suffered a third stroke, which had paralysed his right side completely," family sources said in Mumbai.

"Jones had been admitted to the hospital around a month ago for treatment," family sources said. The end came at around 1100 hrs, IST on Saturday when the world champion was at home, they said.

He is survived by his wife and a son.

"As per his last wishes, we shall be cremating him instead of the usual burial," family sources said. The cremation would take place at the Shivaji park crematorium at 0930 hrs, on Sunday.

Jones had won the world billiards championship in 1958 and again in 1964. Later he played an exhibition match before the British queen at the Buckingham palace.

The nation honoured him with the Padmashri, Arjuna award, and Dronacharaya award. He also won the Dadaji Kondeo award.
